Manon Lescaut is een van de grote klassiekers van de Franse literatuur. Het boek werd vele malen verfilmd en inspireerde Massenet en Puccini tot hun gelijknamige opera’s.
Het vertelt het verhaal van de noodlottige liefde tussen chevalier des Grieux en de beeldschone femme fatale Manon. Beiden hebben een goed hart, maar door allerlei omstandigheden, met name Manons hang naar rijkdom en praal, lukt het ze niet samen een fatsoenlijk leven op te bouwen en leiden ze een losbandig, avontuurlijk bestaan.
Uiteindelijk wordt Manon door toedoen van de vader van des Grieux naar Amerika verbannen, waar ze in de woestijn sterft in bijzijn van haar minnaar.
Prévost schrijft snel en natuurlijk, gebruikt geen woord te veel en weet in een kort bestek een emotionele achtbaan neer te zetten.
