Op 10 mei 1940 werd het vliegveld bij de invasie door de Duitsers gebombardeerd en bezet. Gedurende de oorlog werden er door de Wehrmacht overal bunkers gebouwd en door de Luftwaffe o.a. Messerschmitt 110-jachtvliegtuigen gestationeerd, die vanaf hier opstegen om geallieerde bommenwerpers op terugreis van het bombarderen van Duitse steden uit de lucht te schieten.<\/p>\n<p>Het zwaarste bombardement vond plaats op 4 mei 1944 toen Britse bommenwerpers het terrein bestookten. Een Amerikaans vliegtuig gooide op 28 mei 1944 de laatste bommen op \u2018Bergen\u2019. Na de landing van de geallieerden in Normandi\u00eb op 6 juni 1944, bliezen de Duitsers het vliegveld op. Er volgden nog 2200 vluchten met B-17 bommenwerpers vanaf vliegveld Bergen, dit keer voor voedseldroppings. Na de oorlog nam Defensie het terrein in gebruik, en in de &#8216;Koude Oorlog&#8217; die volgde werden veel loodsen en bijgebouwen gebouwd.
